About Individual Therapy

Some seasons of life leave us feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from ourselves. You may be managing anxiety that won't quiet down, carrying more than you can sustain, or standing at the edge of a big change. You don't have to figure it out alone.

I'm Alicia Barrett, a marriage and family therapist. I offer individual therapy in person in University Place and online anywhere in Washington State, and I'm accepting new clients.

Therapy Session Discussion

What I help with

  • Anxiety and stress: worry, overthinking, tension, feeling constantly on edge

  • Depression: low mood, numbness, loss of motivation or meaning

  • Burnout: exhaustion from work, caregiving, or carrying everything for everyone

  • Life transitions: a move, a career change, an empty nest, divorce, loss, or becoming a parent

  • Relationship patterns: noticing how your past and your closest relationships shape how you feel today

How I work

I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and mindfulness-based practices, grounded in the understanding that we are shaped by our relationships. We'll explore what you're feeling and the deeper emotions underneath it, notice the patterns that keep you stuck, and build self-awareness and practical tools for feeling steadier.

Mindfulness is part of the process. We practice slowing down, noticing what's happening in your mind and body, and meeting it without judgment. Many clients find this is what helps change last beyond the therapy room.

My approach is calm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. You set the pace, and we focus on what matters most to you.

What to expect

  1. A free 15-minute consultation. You tell me what's going on, ask any questions, and we both see whether it feels like a good fit.

  2. An intake session. We take time to get to know you, your story, and what you'd like to be different.

  3. Regular sessions. Typically weekly 50-minute sessions, in person or by secure video. We'll check in regularly on how it's going and what you're noticing.

Fees and logistics

  • 50-minute session: $150

  • 90-minute session: $225 (available when the schedule allows; please request in advance)

  • A limited number of reduced-fee sessions are available; ask during your consultation.

  • Private pay. I can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement from your insurer.

  • Office: 3560 Bridgeport Way, University Place, WA 98466. Online sessions are available throughout Washington State.

Full details are on my Policies page.

Individual therapy FAQ

How do I know if I need therapy? You don't need a crisis. If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected, or you want to understand yourself better, therapy can help.

What if I've never done therapy before? That's very common. We'll go at your pace, and the free consultation is a good place to ask anything.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy for individuals? EFT helps you understand your emotions and how your relationships shape them. It's especially helpful if your struggles are tied to patterns in your closest relationships or family history.

Do you offer online therapy? Yes. I offer individual therapy by secure, HIPAA-compliant video for clients located in Washington State, as well as in person in University Place.

How long are sessions, and how often do we meet? Sessions are 50 minutes, or 90 minutes by request when the schedule allows. Most people begin weekly. We'll adjust together as you progress.

Do you take insurance? I'm private pay and don't bill insurance directly. I can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your plan.

Is therapy right for me if I'm in crisis? Therapy sessions aren't an emergency service. If you're in crisis, call or text 988, call the Pierce County Crisis Line at 1-800-576-7764, text HOME to 741741, or go to your nearest emergency room.
